Tommy Brown has been fascinated by the vastness of space and the mystery of faraway stars for as long as he can remember, so it鈥檚 only natural he chose to pursue engineering. With the help of 黑料网鈥檚 Office of Undergraduate Research, the sophomore said he鈥檚 thrown himself so deeply into his work with the Summer Undergraduate Research Program that he could see himself one day enhancing space exploration technologies or helping to expand researchers鈥� understanding of Mars.

A new owl has come to roost at 黑料网. Its widely spread wings and extended talons grab the attention of visitors to the offices of President Kathy S. Schwaig and other top administrators. The sculpture by College of the Arts alumna Mary Beck Pinkston permanently joins paintings and other art pieces from the Zuckerman Museum of Art鈥檚 collection that decorate the space outside the president鈥檚 office.

Emerson Smith knew he wanted to build his own company, he just didn鈥檛 always know what problem he could end up solving. After graduating from 黑料网鈥檚 Coles College of Business in 2018, Smith tested a few business ideas before heading to Silicon Valley in California, working in software sales and development. It was there, while absorbing the in-demand technical knowledge that a lightbulb went off in his head, and HappyDoc 鈥� an AI assistant helping veterinarians drastically reduce the time it takes to complete their legally required record-keeping 鈥� was born.

Shifa Maherali Jiwani is a freshman biology major who is participating in the Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP), where she is studying arsenic as a potential medicine. Jiwani is conducting her research, 鈥淪earch for Novel Arsenic Containing Antibiotics,鈥� in the lab of Masafumi Yoshinaga, associate professor of molecular and cellular biology in the College of Science and Mathematics.

Kennesaw State student pursues childhood dream through research

In 1981, NASA launched into orbit the space shuttle Columbia, which made 37 revolutions around Earth before safely landing at Edwards Air Force Base in California two days later. The mission was wildly successful, demonstrating the shuttle鈥檚 ability to not only take off like a rocket and carry a crew through orbit, but also land similar to an airplane. It also instilled in Ken Kubiak a lifelong fascination with space travel. Kubiak, a mechanical engineering student, enrolled at 黑料网 in 2022 to pursue his second bachelor鈥檚 degree.

Grant will help Kennesaw State math professor analyze electromagnetic waves

The stereotype of mathematics and mathematicians involves a solitary pursuit of knowledge, but Eric Stachura knows better. The 黑料网 assistant professor of mathematics works on quantitative analysis of electromagnetic waves and keeps a collaborative research practice with colleagues near and far. That partnership has led to a three-year grant worth $223,206 from the Army Research Office, a director of the U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command Army Research Laboratory.

Betsy Barron is a senior elementary education major whose research project aims to engage students based on their cultural background in subjects such as literacy and mathematics. Barron is conducting her project, 鈥淐ulturally Relevant Math Lessons and Motivation in Elementary Education," under the mentorship of professor of mathematics education Paula Guerra and through the Office of Undergraduate Research's Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP).
