The Department of Sports and Recreation's state-of-the-art aquatics facilities offer events and workshops for students and faculty at ºÚÁÏÍø. Take swim lessons, join the swim team or try one of the many aquatic workouts we offer!

Swim Lessons

All swim instructors have gone through hours of training and have gone through state and federal background checks. Many come from a

competitive swimming background.

You will need to add the participant as a dependent to your profile. View instructions on adding a dependent.

Private Lessons


Private lessons are 30-minute lessons, available to those looking for a smaller instructor to participant ratio. Lessons are scheduled with one participant per instructor during open swim times.

Group Lessons

Registration is by age group with participants being placed into skill level groups according to participation history, or an assessment of each participant’s skills on the first day of class. Group Lessons are taught using the American Red Cross curriculum. Each session includes 8 classes.

  • Adult Swimming lessons are intended for teens and adults who wish to improve their knowledge and skill for many reasons. It may be to overcome their fear of the water and to learn the basic skills or to improve their skill and technique or competition. Each class is 50 minutes. Minimum of 3 participants, maximum of 10 participants.

  • Parent/Child (ages 6 months -3 years)

    Parents and children learn together to increase a child's comfort level in the water and build a foundation of basic skills, such as arm and leg movements and breath control. This fun-filled class helps introduce water safety concepts, encouraging a healthy recreational habit that your entire family can enjoy. Each class is 30 minutes. Minimum of 3 participants, maximum of 10 participants.

    Parent and Child Skills Checklist Learn-to-Swim

    Preschool (approximately 4-5 years)

    Preschool-age children are taught basic aquatic safety and swimming skills, all the while increasing their comfort level in and around the water. Skills are age-appropriate, helping children achieve success on a regular basis and enjoy social interactions with other children. Each class is 30 minutes. Minimum of 3 participants, maximum of 4 participants.

    Levels 1-4 (approximately ages 6 years through teen)

    Designed to help participants achieve maximum success, Learn-to-Swim courses are based on a logical, six-level progression that helps swimmers of varying ages and abilities develop their water safety, survival and swim skills. Each class is 50 minutes. Minimum of 3 participants, maximum of 6 participants.

Programs and Events

Chattahoochee River Swim Challenge

The Chattahoochee River swim challenge allows participants to visually assess how much effort they have put into their workouts. Participants can advance 430 miles through the state of Georgia and back by keeping track of the number of miles or the amount of time spent exercising in the water. 

The challenge has no start or end date and is on-going! Participants can join at any time!

Masters Swim Team 

The KSU Masters Team is an opportunity to pursue a lifelong love of swimming for Sports and Recreation members over 18 years in a supportive, coached, team practice! We welcome swimmers of all abilities and levels from novice to competitive! Those that choose to can join one of our fitness challenges or get some help to prepare for a competition!

Please note that participation in USMS Masters Sanctioned Meets is an option available only to members of United States Masters Swimming. U.S. Masters Swimming is a national membership-operated nonprofit that provides membership benefits to nearly 65,000 Masters swimmers across the country. Get more information from .

USMS Fitness Challenge

The KSU Masters Swim Team hosts the United States Masters Swimming Fitness Challenges every semester during Masters Swim practice. The morning workout will be structured to meet the goal of the challenge. All are welcome to participate in the fitness challenge workout day.

Certifications and Workshops

The Department of Sports and Recreation is an American Red Cross Authorized Provider for all your training needs! All courses are taught on campus by certified instructors who have gone through state and federal background checks. Participants must be present during all class time and actively engaged to obtain a certification.

Lifeguard Pre-Requisite Skills

  • Interested in Lifeguarding and taking a Lifeguarding class? Do you want to see if you have what it takes without the commitment of the full class? Attend one of our upcoming Lifeguard Pre-Requisite Skills Practice classes and get coaching. The Lifeguard Pre-Requisite Skills Practice prepares potential Lifeguard candidates to pass the Lifeguard Certification Course pre-requisites consisting of Swim continuously 300 yards using either front crawl or breaststroke. Tread water for 2 minutes, using only legs. Complete a timed event in 1 minute, 40 secs (Goggles are NOT allowed) Starting in water, swim 20 yards. Surface dive 7-10 ft. to retrieve a 10lb object. Return to surface and swim 20 yds. on the back to return to the starting point with both hands holding the object and keeping the face at or near the surface. Class is held by an American Red Cross certified Lifeguard Instructor. Classes last 30 minutes and are held at the SRAC indoor pool.

Basic Level Courses

  • The primary purpose of the American Red Cross Lifeguard Course is to provide entry-level lifeguard participants with the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies and to provide professional level care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries and sudden illnesses until Emergency Medical Services take over.

     Prerequisites:

    • Must be 15 years of age on or before the final scheduled class date of the course.
    • Swim 300 yards continuously, demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing. Candidates may swim using the front crawl, breaststroke, or a combination of both, but swimming on the back or side is not allowed. Swim goggles may be used.
    • Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs.
    • Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds: Starting in the water, swim 20 yards on the surface; goggles may NOT be used. Surface dive feet-first or head-first, to a depth of 7-10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object. Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point with both hands holding the 10-pound object and keeping the face at or near the surface. Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.

  • The American Red Cross Lifeguard Review blended learning course is designed to help participants update their skills while also extending their certification for another two years. The Red Cross also offers review courses, for those whose certification is still valid (or within 30 days of expiring) while allowing participants to continue to work without a lapse in verification. The blended learning program allows participants to learn at their own pace with online courses and participate in in-person skills sessions.

Instructor Level Courses

  • The primary purpose of the American Red Cross Basic Lifeguarding Instructor Course is to train instructors to teach the basic-level American Red Cross Lifeguarding courses including CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED and, First Aid.

    Prerequisites:

    • Be at least 17 years old on or before the final scheduled session of the course.
    • Possess a current basic-level certification in Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED.
    • Successfully complete the online Introduction to the Lifeguarding Instructor Course prior to the pre-course skills session via the class roster and online content completion status report.
    • Obtain all instructor and participant materials before entering the first session of the instructor course. Materials consist of:
      • American Red Cross Lifeguarding Instructor’s Manual
      • Lifeguarding course presentation and/or DVD
      • American Red Cross Lifeguarding Manual (print or digital)

  • The purpose of the American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor course is to train Instructor Candidates to teach courses and presentations in the American Red Cross Swimming and Water Safety program by developing their understanding of how to use the course materials, how to conduct training sessions, and how to evaluate participants’ progress.

    Prerequisites:

    • Be at least 16 years of age on or before the final scheduled class date of the course.
    • Have successfully completed the Fundamentals of Instructor Training course.
    • Demonstrate the ability to perform swimming skills consistent with Level 4 Stroke Performance:Swim 25 yards each of Front Crawl, Back Crawl, Breaststroke, Elementary Backstroke, Sidestroke, and 15 yards of Butterfly.
    • Maintain position on the back for 1-minute in deep water
    • Tread water for 1-minute
