Sports and Recreation Student Employment

The Department of Sports and Recreation employs over 250 student employees, making our department one of the largest student employers on campus. Student employees have major roles in our overall operations. We are looking for dependable and reliable students to help facilitate the programs and services we offer.

Applicants must have excellent customer service skills and a positive attitude in serving our students and other recreation members. Mandatory meetings are scheduled throughout the semester. Most positions require a minimum of 12 hours per week during fall and spring semesters and a minimum of 6 hours per week during the summer semester. Hours worked can range from early mornings to late nights and weekends. Students must be enrolled at Kennesaw State for a minimum of six credit hours during the fall and spring semesters.

Student Employment Positions

  • The Group Fitness Instructors are enthusiastic and motivating individuals who lead fun, safe and effective exercise classes through a variety of formats, such as indoor cycling, yoga, cardio fitness and strength training. Primary responsibilities include programming and teaching fitness classes, customer service, and assisting with special events. 

    All Group Fitness Instructors are required to attain a nationally recognized certification. Practicum opportunity available for individuals not yet certified.

  • Ready to start helping others but not sure how to get there? The process to become a group fitness instructor is incredibly rewarding, but requires patience, time and commitment. The OwlFit Group Fitness Prep Course will help you get there.

  • The Group Fitness Practical Skills Internship is designed to prepare participants to teach group fitness classes.

    The person will be expected to complete the following primary responsibilities:

    • Attend and actively participate in the Group Fitness Practical Skills course: 18 hours
    • Demonstrate an interest in exercise principles, kinesiology, and biomechanics.
    • Shadow/co-teach within the guidance of the OwlFit Leadership Team and/or a Group Fitness Instructor mentor: 8 hours
    • Assist the mentor GFI during shadowing/co-teaching with the following:
    • Motivating, leading, and guiding participants through an effective workout with enthusiasm.
    • Monitoring participants and their ability to ensure proper use of equipment and technique.
    • Review different group fitness formats using provided evaluation tools: 4 hours
    • Teach group fitness classes under the guidance of the OwlFit Leadership Team and/or a Group Fitness mentor: 8 hours
    • Educate participants on proper and safe exercise form, including exercise progressions/regression.
    • Design group fitness class format and exercises.
    • Motivate, lead, and guide participants through an effective workout with enthusiasm.
    • Maintain consistent communication through WhentoWork, email, phone, and/or, other means as required by OwlFit Leadership Team.
    • Assist the OwlFit Leadership Team and/or OwlFit Mentor in an emergency within the scope of training and certification
    • Provide excellent customer service.
    • Promote the mission of the Department of Sports and Recreation.
       

    Additional responsibilities may include:

    • Attend and participate in mandatory bi-weekly in- services/meetings.
    • Participate in OwlFit special events and/or programs.
    • Assist with equipment cleaning and inspection.

  • The OwlFit Personal Trainer team designs individual exercise programs that assist client in accomplishing their individual fitness goals to develop a rewarding experience. OwlFit Personal Trainers must possess a personal training certification by a nationally recognized organization.

    Primary responsibilities of an OwlFit Personal Trainer include:

    • Building rapport with clients
    • Evaluating each client’s baseline fitness level
    • Prescribing safe and effective exercise programs tailored to the individual

  • Nature Bound Trip Leaders are responsible for promoting and hosting outdoor trips and clinics. This position is responsible for leading peers on outdoor trips while managing risks and instructing outdoor skills. Nature Bound Trip Leaders also play a major role in deciding which trips to host and planning them.

    Responsibilities:

    • Lead KSU students on outdoor trips
    • Guide trip participants in activities that include hiking, cycling, paddlesports, rock climbing, etc.
    • Instruct participants in outdoor skills clinics
    • Advertise outdoor programs at on-campus promotional events
    • Propose trips and plan them from start to finish
    • Participate in appropriate training such as Wilderness and Remote First Aid, and activity specific trainings (kayaking, mountain biking, river safety and rescue, etc.)
    • Driving a 12 passenger van

    Qualifications:

    • KSU Student with 2.0 GPA or higher
    • A love for the outdoors

    • Experience with Nature Bound as a participant
  • Bike Shop Techs are responsible for overseeing the bicycle repair shop processes. 

    Responsibilities:

    • Must have a working knowledge of bicycles
    • Position repairs and test rides bicycles for patrons of the KSU Sports and Recreation Center
    • Must actively participate in advertising events
    • Must attend mandatory staff trainings
    • May be required to drive to transport equipment, etc.
    • Position will oversee Outdoor Adventures Desk when necessary

    Qualifications:

    • Must be currently enrolled with a minimum of 6 credit hours
    • Must work a minimum of 9 hours with a maximum of 21 hours per week
    • Must be available to work between the hours of 10am and 4pm Monday through Friday
    • Must be available during Summer as well as Fall and Spring semesters.
    • Mechanical and/or bicycle repair experience preferred
  • KSU Climbing Gym Attendants will be under the supervision of the Experiential Program Manager. KSU Climbing Gym Attendants are responsible for supervising patrons, enforcing procedures, and offering top rope belay and bouldering instruction at the KSU Climbing Gym.

  • The Outdoor Adventures Desk Attendants are responsible for overseeing the point of sale system for Outdoor Adventures programs and services. They oversee the outdoor gear rental process and process registrations for Outdoor Adventures programs. 

    Responsibilities:

    • Working point of sale for Outdoor Adventures
    • Registering patrons for Nature Bound trips
    • Checking out/in gear to patrons to include bicycles
    • Counting inventories for all Outdoor Adventures gear
    • Repair and Maintenance of outdoor gear

    Qualifications: 

    • Must be currently enrolled with a minimum of 6 credit hours
    • Must work a minimum of 9 hours with a maximum of 21 hours per week
    • Must be available to work between the hours of 10am and 4pm Monday through Friday
    • Must be available during Summer as well as Fall and Spring semesters
  • The Experiential Program Facilitator is a fun, interactive student position that is focused on facilitating team building activities. An Experiential Program Facilitator is responsible for leading team building activities, interacting with groups, and encouraging valuable debriefs. Team building activities include games, initiatives, and the use of portable elements. All Experiential Program Facilitators must attend a mandatory training during the week of 30 July- 3 August. This position does not have set hours and hours are determined off of scheduled groups. This position is high activity and is located both indoors and outdoors.

  • Lifeguards at the Recreation and Activities Center are responsible for the safety of everyone in the Aquatic center. This includes both the Kennesaw and Marietta Campus Recreational Facilities: one outdoor pool, two indoor lap pools, and spa area. Lifeguard staff's main responsibility will be to survey patrons and monitor safety in the pool, in addition there will be opportunities to instruct swim classes. Certified lifeguards are preferred but not necessary, training will be provided. All applicants must be able to swim, a swim test will be administered.

    Prerequisites: Swim 300 yards continuously, tread water for 1 minute, recover a 10lb brick from 10 ft. of water, and swim 20 yards to the end of the pool. For more information contact Cheryl Richardson 470-578-4839 or bricha89@kennesaw.edu

  • Swim Instructors are responsible for swim lesson instruction at the Kennesaw State University Student Recreation and Activities Center and the Recreation and Wellness Center. Swim instructors communicate with parents and participants, lead swim lesson sessions, as well as ensure the safety of all lesson participants.

     Certified swim instructors are preferred but not necessary, training will be provided. All applicants must demonstrate a proficiency in swimming strokes.

    Prerequisites: Demonstrate the following strokes with proficiency:

    • Front crawl, Backstroke, Breaststroke, Elementary Backstroke, Sidestroke – 25 yards.
    • Butterfly – 15 yards.
    • Back Float for 1 minute (floating or sculling)
    • Tread water for 1 minute

  • Facility Attendants oversee activity spaces in the recreational facility and ensures the safety of all users. Facility Attendants gain practical work experience through assisting their supervisor in the daily management of the activity spaces and equipment.

    Responsibilities:

    • Clearly articulate and enforce all facility and fitness equipment usage while providing excellent customer service
    • Perform cleaning duties of equipment and activity areas provided by direction of their supervisor as outlined on the task lists
    • Ensure safety of participants by inspecting the facility, analyzing issues, and reporting unsafe conditions to the supervisor
    • Work with others to perform event and equipment set-ups and break downs
    • Work with others to respond to emergencies including conducting facility evacuations
    • Provide basic instruction to patrons on how to safely and properly use fitness equipment. This is not the same as providing training advice to patrons. Facility Attendants are not permitted to provide training guidance to patrons

    Qualifications: 

    • Currently enrolled at ºÚÁÏÍø with a minimum overall GPA of 2.0
    • Must be a self-starter, enthusiastic and a good ambassador of the department 
  • The Facility Operations Assistant provides direct support in the daily operation and supervision of the assigned facility. Oversees all student facility personnel, security, cash handling, risk management, equipment set-up and breakdown and customer service operations. Serves as the primary department liaison with all facility user groups and is responsible for all decisions in the absence of full-time Recreation staff.

    Responsibilities:

    • May act as shift manager, overseeing the attendants working within assigned area(s)
    • Oversees the facility operation, security and risk management including but not limited to providing care in emergency situations, performing building inspections, and reporting door issues
    • Supports the operation and mission of the department/division by completing additional tasks as assigned by the Manager or Coordinator of assigned areas
    • Prepares activity areas and sets up start up cash for registers
    • Produces reports and forms including but not limited to Shift Reports, Tender Reports, Facility Work Orders and Accident Reports
    • Trains and supervises assigned students
    • Provides assistance to other program areas as assigned
    • Serves as the primary contact with facility and group reservations
    • Performs activity space event setup and breakdown
    • Performs excellent customer service concerning departmental facilities, programs and services
    • Responds to inquiries concerning departmental facilities, programs and services in a timely and professional manner

    Qualifications: 

    • High schhol diploma or equivalent
    • Familiarity with the recreation facilities, programs and services
  • Service Desk Attendants are employed to ensure patrons have authorized access and use of the facility. They assist in greeting, screening, and referring visitors to the appropriate recreation program and staff. They provide accurate information and answers questions regarding hours of operations, programs, and policies. Service Desk Attendants are also responsible for checking in/out facility and/or fitness equipment available for the convenience of the patrons. They also clean, inspect, and ensure that all equipment is ready for checkout, reporting any broken or damaged equipment to the Facility Operations Assistant. 

    Responsibilities:

    • Greet patrons upon entry to facility and provide excellent customer service to all patrons
    • Enforce building entry policies; checking ID and guest passes of patrons as they swipe in and out or through the turnstiles 
    • Assist patrons with waiver forms and ensure the forms are completed correctly
    • Responsible for processing and ensuring the selection of appropriate membership for eligible  patron populations, and ensuring the proper completion of all forms and documents
    • Assist with the check-in of all facility guests, sign-ins and ID verification
    • Responsible for the order and the cleanliness of the service desk
    • Monitor drinks, food, gum, etc. when patrons enter the facility
    • Screen phone calls and visitors
    • Log-in any lost and found items and assist patrons who are attempting to locate lost item
    • Responsible for checking in and out equipment items to patrons

    Qualifications:

    • Currently enrolled at ºÚÁÏÍø with a minimum overall GPA of 2.0
    • Familiarity with the recreation facilities, programs and services
    • Current certification in Adult CPR/AED 
    • Must be a self-starter, enthusiastic and a good ambassador of the department
  • The Office Attendant assists in providing excellent customer service to all patrons in person and by phone, by referring visitors to the appropriate recreation program and staff.

    Primary Responsibilities:
    · Have a general knowledge of program offerings to assist patrons who may be in need of assistance.
    · Assist professional staff with tasks that may arise.
    · Screen phone calls and visitors to the Department of Sports & Recreation office. 

  • Graphic Design student assistants assist the Marketing Coordinator with the layout and graphic design of department marketing materials. Marketing material flyers include: flyers/posters, digital assets, and promotional material.  Graphic design student assistants communicate with various stakeholders to create materials in accordance with department and University guidelines.  
     
    Responsibilities: 

    • Creation of various projects
    • Communication with various stakeholders
    • Ability to receive feedback and make changes as requested
    • Follow Style Guidelines based on Department and University standards
    • Photography as needed for various projects
    • Placement of materials around campus 

    Qualifications:

    • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Cloud, InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator)

  • The marketing and promotions assistant is responsible for marketing and promoting the Department of Sports and Recreation to the KSU community through programs and special event opportunities. This position will be responsible for understanding the department and aspects of each program area and facilities. The marketing and promotions assistant will place promotional materials around campus, interact with community members and have a presence at various special events.  
     
    Responsibilities: 

    • Maintain a working knowledge of the Department of Sports and Recreation, facilities, program areas, and special events.  
    • Event planning to increase Sports and Recreation presence on campus

  • The Social Media Student Assistant assists the Marketing Coordinator with the overall direction and implementation of social media strategy for the Department of Sports and Recreation. This position is responsible for the creation and scheduling of day-to-day posts. This position will research marketing tools, trends, and promotion opportunities. The person in this role will be someone who is creative, outgoing, has the ability to work with minimal supervision, and has great attention to detail.  
     
    Responsibilities:  

    • Developing social media daily content and campaigns 
    • Maintaining a content calendar that aligns with departments social media strategy, goals and vision 
    • Social Listening - monitoring social media responses (Direct Messages, Comments, Tags) 
    • Development of graphics/images to use for social media postings 
    • Analyze and monitor analytics 
    • Develop professional relationships with co-workers, participants and patrons 
    • Demonstrate a desire to learn and apply knowledge as a Sports and Recreation ambassador 
    • Fulfill scheduled tasks/projects in a timely manner by meeting deadlines

  • The PR and Communications Assistant is responsible for various publications such as email newsletters, features of students, faculty or staff and events for the Department of Sports and Recreation. This position will be responsible for communicating clearly and effectively in both written and verbal formats.  
     
    Responsibilities: 
    • Maintain a working knowledge of the Department of Sports and Recreation, facilities, program areas, and special events
    • Maintaining 3 newsletter email lists and analyze analytics to determine best practices for each
    • Develop professional relationships with co-workers, participants and patrons 
    • Develop and write features for patrons as well as programs
    • Willingness to work in a fast-paced environment

  • The Intramural Sports Officials are responsible for officiating intramural contests and assisting in game management of intramural sports including flag football, basketball, soccer, softball, volleyball, and other activities. Officials are asked to demonstrate rules knowledge, enforce program rules and policy, assist in managing recreational facilities, and provide high levels of customer service to create an inclusive and welcoming atmosphere for participants. Previous officiating experience is not required but an interest in sports is encouraged.

  • Sports Park Attendants for the Owls' Nest and The Perch facilities will provide customer service to all patrons and visitors of the Owls' Nest and The Perch; know and enforce policies, procedures, and rules intelligently; be attentive to each individuals needs; and report problems and concerns to the Manager on Duty, Maintenance Technician, or members of the exempt staff via the shift report and other forms of communication.

Graduate Assistant Positions

ºÚÁÏÍø’s Department of Sports and Recreation offers Graduate Assistant positions. The appointment for all positions will begin August and conclude May; each position is expected to work 20 hours per week.  Student fees, school application fees, and other expenses will be the responsibility of individual filling the positions.

  • Graduate Assistantship Agreement between ºÚÁÏÍø and Georgia State University

    The Facility Operations and Competitive Sports positions are offered as an agreement between ºÚÁÏÍø and Georgia State University; all applicants must be accepted as a graduate student into the Georgia State University’s Sport Administration, M. S. and also apply for the Graduate Research Assistant position desired with KSU’s Department of Sports and Recreation.

    The Facilities Graduate Assistant will be responsible for managing the day-to-day event operations for the Student Recreation and Activities Center (SRAC) and Student Recreation and Wellness Center (RWC). This will include facility reservations, operating supplies, payroll and management of student staff. The Facilities Graduate Assistant is expected to assist with special events held within the SRAC and RWC. This position requires a flexible schedule including non-traditional work hours and other duties as assigned.

  • The Sport Programs Graduate Assistant shall maintain a role in overseeing a comprehensive Intramural and Club program. Responsible for marketing and promoting Department of Sports & Recreation Sport Programs (DS&R CS) events including outreach, generating interest, and assessing the campus student population for Sport Programs interests/program; providing feedback and recommendations for events/programs based on campus community feedback, comments, interactions;  and develop, plan, and execute student staff and Sport Programs volunteer/officer trainings and meetings on both Marietta and Kennesaw campuses, and other programs and events within Sport Programs. Direct Club Sports and Intramural Sports events including – event set-up and teardown, game management, risk management, student staff supervision, participant relations, and reservation requests.

  • The Aquatics Graduate Assistant will be responsible for assisting in managing a comprehensive aquatics program. Reporting directly to the Aquatics Coordinator, the Aquatics Graduate Assistant’s primary responsibilities will be assisting with aquatics programs and overseeing the daily aquatic operations. Duties will include coordinating the program schedule, conducting facility inspections, ordering supplies, processing payroll and managing student staff. This position requires a flexible schedule including non-traditional work hours and other duties as assigned.
